Spain Residency and Citizenship

Life in Spain

Location
Spain is a sovereign state largely located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, with archipelagos in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea and several small territories on and near the north African coast. Its mainland is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea except for a small land boundary with Gibraltar; to the north and northeast by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; and to the west and northwest by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean. Along with France and Morocco, it is one of only three countries to have both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines.

People
The country’s population is about 47 million. Roman Catholicism has long been the main religion of Spain, although it no longer has official status by law. About 69% of Spaniards self-identify as Catholics, 2% other faith, and about 26% identify with no religion.

Language
Spanish, recognized in the constitution as Castilian, is the official language of the entire country. The constitution also establishes that all other languages of Spain will also be official in their respective autonomous communities. As a percentage of the general population, Basque is spoken by 2%, Catalan (or Valencian) by 17%, and Galician by 7% of all Spaniards.

Climate
Three main climatic zones can be distinguished, according to geographical situation and topographic conditions: Mediterranean, characterized by warm and dry summers; semi-arid, characterized by a dry season that extends beyond the summer; and oceanic, characterized by winter and summer temperatures that are influenced by the ocean. Apart from these main types, other sub-types can be found, such as alpine, desert, and sub-tropical.

Capital
The capital of Spain is Madrid, one of the great cities of the world. A metropolis of elegant boulevards and expansive, manicured parks, it’s renowned for its rich repositories of European art. While Madrid possesses modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods and streets. The population of the city is about 3.3 million, and its metropolitan area is the third-largest in the European Union.

Spain's capitalist mixed economy is the 14th largest by nominal GDP worldwide and the 4th largest in the European Union. It is classified as a high-income economy and among the countries of very high human development. Spain is the world's largest producer of olive oil and Europe's largest producer of lemons, oranges, and strawberries, and its major industries are varied. Tourism is its largest source of income.
